Audiences and critics seem to be mixed, but Doug and Rob have some big opinions about this big movie, Alita: Battle Angel.

Alita: Battle Angel is a 2019 American cyberpunk action film based on Yukito Kishiro's manga series Gunnm, also known as Battle Angel Alita. Directed by Robert Rodriguez, the film is written by James Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis produced by Cameron and Jon Landau. Rosa Salazar stars as the titular Alita, a cyborg who sets out to learn about her past after she awakens in a new body with no memory of who she is. Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley and Keean Johnson also star in supporting roles.

Understanding the intentional sappiness/cheeziness of the "romance" and its tragic failure: "Hugo's (Humanity's) Fall" Alita is at least 300 years old... she's been through a lot of $hit, and yet she's the most human person of all, 100% devoted to doing the right thing, to being a good person, Alita never cowers before evil, "I do not stand by in the presence of evil", she truly is "the most human person I've ever known" (as Hugo said rightly), total sacrifice to others, "willing to give her heart, her life, and her own interests/dreams/desires for someone else". Alita knows full well how sappy and cheezy the romance was with Hugo, but she didn't care, as she wanted/needed that hopeful moment of escape, from the $hit of the world and of her life. Alita intentionally believed in Hugo, hoping he was that sappy/cheezy "perfect guy", just wanting a brief moment to smile, to forget all the $hit of her world and of her existence, but then Hugo had to ruin it, as he wasn't that sappy cheezy "perfect guy"... Alita's one moment of escapism, her brief chance to smile and forget the world and reality, was crushed by the reality of the world and of people. No one is more human than herself, she's way more human than humans, and so she is constantly disappointed by the rest of humanity, and constantly having to stand up to its evil, as she's the one good person in the entire world. Alita truly is an angel, fallen down from the heavens upon this undeserving world and its undeserving humanity. Alita is the physical embodiment of humanity, Alita is the “heart and soul of humanity” (using a quote about Heero Yuy from Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, Alita and Heero Yuy are practically siblings, lol) ———— After seeing Alita, I found myself... wishing I could swap/replace/switch a lot of people I know with Alita Alita is the perfect person/human, the perfect woman, the perfect wife, but none of us are good enough for her. Alita is just too good and pure for us. Having Alita as a wife, and she doing her own fighting for herself and/or fighting for me, reminded me of this scene from Cinderella Man: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAc7d5LWB_o "Ya, ain't she something!"

The movie is self-aware enough to know when it's being corny. Alita even jokes about it when she says "That was intense" after literally offering Hugo her heart and smiles while he chuckles along with her.

As a fan of the manga, I do enjoyed the movie a lot. However, I do worry about what the movie did to Nova. To me, in manga, Nova is the one best mad-scientist-kind-of villain of all time in pop culture anywhere on earth, but, the movie’s setting kind of destroy Nova’s character for future development (to be honest, it worked quite well for now, but not for possible sequels), which, to me is the best part of the original manga. I don’t know how convenient for you in the western world to find and read the manga, but if you can, please do that. The original story, although has many plot holes, is very “beautiful,” and that, is very rare in SF. "Akira" is epic, "Ghost in the Shell" is visionary, but "Gunnm"(aka battle angle Alita) is beautiful. Only by reading through the manga, can you understand why Nova’s part is so important in the beauty of the story, as well as why I’m worrying about Nova’s future development in the movie

+Tom Norton Thanks for letting me know your feeling about Nova in the movie, although I personally like a more human Nova, I do like the casting of Edward Norton, can't think of better actor for that role myself, and from that casting decision, I do believe they will develop that role quite a bit. For me, the only concern is, Nova stands as an "somewhat-evil-but-not-by-the-same-definition" 3rd-party in original story, so making him side with Salem concerns me. Maybe I think too much, maybe I just need to relax and trust that my beloved story is in good hands. The first movie is indeed a good one, very enjoyable to me.

I haven't read the Manga but I liked how Nova was portrayed as a shadowy, almost supernatural presence. The blue eyes whenever he possessed someone were rather unnerving and you'd be forgiven for thinking that he's some kind of ghost. I think the sequels will probably portray Nova more like he is in the Manga. They cast Edward Norton and made sure that he looked the same as the Manga incarnation when he physically appeared. James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez want to do the Battle Angel series justice so although they can take liberties, they probably won't change Nova too drastically.

I haven't read the Manga but weren't Alita's big eyes meant to cause her opponents to underestimate her? They see this cute, wide eyed little girl and they have no idea that she could beat the crap out of them which gives Alita the element of surprise. And from a real world perspective, Japan generally draws their main characters eyes like that because it symbolises youth and innocence. There's an explanation both within the context of the story and in the way the Japanese do their Mangas.

Something interesting I noticed about Chiren is that when Vector said he was sending Hugo to Zylem, she instantly realised that he meant for Zapan to murder him. The reason I like this is because it adds more depth to Chiren without her saying a word. In that moment, she realised that going to Zylem meant she was going to be murdered. Yes, she backed out of her deal with Vector partially to help Alita and in memory of her daughter, but when you really think about it, there was still a streak of self-preservation that influenced her decision. Nova noted that Chiren was a selfish person and even in her redemptive act, that selfishness hadn't completely gone away. She was trying to get out of her deal with Vector because she realised that if he sent her to Zylem, she'd be dead too.

The only scene where the eyes weren't quite right for me... was in the initial scene with Grewishka/Makaku. Where she is sort of in shock, it doesn't look quite exactly right.... otherwise I love the effect especially what they do for flashbacks. Also note the only characters in the film that have large eyes are the Martians, someone mentioned that the skulls in the martian ship had oversized sockets. So, I suspect it's just that Martians just have bigger eyes perhaps adapted for living in Martian tunnels cities etc..... with reduced illumination, in the manga humans have moved out in the solar system and adapted to each world to varying degrees. An interesting fact is that Gollum has 50k polygons in his eyes, and Alita has layers of 9Million polys... so 180x more polygons. I think they could go back and re-release it in the future with even more realistic eyes... kind of like how the emperor was majorly improved in later releases of star wars (although they adding alot of sucky stuff too).

I criticised Christoph Waltz for smiling when talking about Ido's daughter's death. Then I watched the movie again and realised that he was smiling in a self-deprecating way because he said that he thought Chiren couldn't deal with him just as much as she couldn't deal with the death of their daughter. I made the mistake of taking his smile out of context.

One of the things I like about Alita's story is that it has enough going on to allow pretty much anyone to find something to love about it. If you love romance, it has that. If you love action, it has that too. If you love family bonding, that's there as well. If you have amnesia or sympathise with people who do, that's in there too. If you've lost a child, they even managed to handle that sensitively. If you love a rivalry between the hero and the villain that are mirrors of each other (Alita and Grewishka were both adopted from a scrapyard, one in light and one in darkness, one raised by a good man and the other by an evil one), even that was squeezed in. And yet, despite everything going on, the movie somehow managed to maintain a consistent pace until the last 2 or 3 minutes. I think the only flaw with the movie is that the ending was rushed and it needs at least one sequel in order to work as a complete story. Nitpickers could also complain about corny dialogue but it works within the context of the story being told because teenagers tend to talk like that. Plus, there's a sense of self-awareness like when Alita broke the tension after offering Hugo her heart by joking "That was intense" and smiling when Hugo chuckled along with her. Thank goodness they didn't go full Juno mode with the dialogue. That movie has dated because of phrases like "totally boss", "honest to blog" and "for shiz" while Alita's dialogue is more timeless.

+Tom Norton Also they made Ido less creepy in the movie. In the Manga he build her to keep her as a puppet. But in the movie he was just over protective which is a way better take on. Cameron really knows his stuff that's true!

I think Alita will be remembered like Leia (before Dicksney ruined her), Ellen Ripley and Sarah Conner in the future. Just goes to show that James Cameron hasn't lost his touch and still knows his stuff when it comes to writing women. Granted, he had help from the anime and manga but he changed enough to keep the story fresh - for example, Alita was named after Ido and Chiren's late daughter instead of Ido's cat which was a good decision - whilst still keeping the heart of the source material.

Doug, Rob, you should do an Old vs New review of Alita, comparing the movie with the anime. I watched the anime after seeing the movie and in my mind, there's no contest. The movie is better. For one thing, I was genuinely sad when Hugo died in the movie but when Yugo died in the anime, I had more of a "that sucks" reaction. However, it would be interesting to see the comparisons between them. Perhaps the only part of the anime that's arguably better is that Ido seems more like a warrior in that version.

+Schwarzes Eis You can even see a degree of nature vs nurture in Alita and Grewishka. Imagine if Alita was adopted by Nova and Grewishka was adopted by Ido. We don't know what Grewishka was like before Nova found him so he might not have changed if Ido had raised him but Alita's got a subconscious fighting instinct so if she'd been raised by Nova, he would have abused her, manipulated her and turned her into a weapon. Thanks to being raised by Ido, Alita's a girl first and a weapon second so she's in control of her violent impulses unless she's in physical danger. However, due to her instinctive love of violence, she could have ended up a psychotic monster like Grewishka if Nova had found her in that scrapyard.

A detail I love about Alita and Grewishka is that they're mirrors of each other. For example, did you notice that Grewishka revealed he had been adopted by Nova in a scrapyard just like Alita was adopted by Ido? The differences are that Grewishka was adopted in darkness while Alita was adopted in light and Grewishka was raised by an evil man who didn't care about him while Alita was raised by a good man who loved her.

I was on Rob's side in the argument when it came to Alita being the only cyborg that had a fully CGI face. I thought it lacked consistency. Either all cyborgs are fully CGI with purposefully "not quite human faces", or they should all have their actor's face. Until my brother pointed out that in the flashbacks, Alita's crew of Martian cyborg soldiers ALSO have fully CGI faces. THAT'S where the consistency was! I didn't even catch it until my brother pointed it out :)

1) This movie should have been 2 or 3 but they probably weren't sure if they'd get a sequel so it feels overloaded. 2) They could have cleaned up the editing a lot. This movie was soooo much better than the OVA in almost every way. The OVA was very truncated and had to focus on style over substance. They had to go from plot point A to plot point B with no real connecrions between them and that's where this movie wins over the OVA. The dialogue and exposition can be clunky and I definitely agree about Yugo/Hugo not really working. But overall, pretty good.

Muaj më parë

I prefer Hugo in the movie because his relationship with Alita felt more fleshed out. I think they got to know each other better. When Yugo died in the anime, I just sort of shrugged it off. Maybe the character was technically closer to the manga but due to how rushed the anime was, they only really had one time where they connected and that was in the warehouse while Yugo was on the run. However, when Hugo died in the movie, I was genuinely sad. I saw the movie three times and cried on all three occasions. I think it's because the movie dedicates more time to the relationship than the anime does and I have a weakness for romance (which is odd considering I've never been in a romantic relationship but that might be because I'm scared of falling in love).

What James Cameron did wrong in this day and age is being white and male. What he did right was yet again be the driving force behind a female character that both genders could love without fighting each other over gender politics. Alita will be on the list of aspiring female leads, right next to Ripley and Sarah Connor!

Muaj më parë

Good point. The feminazis and NPCs are shrieking just because Cameron didn't pander to them and he's a straight white male. The only people who complain about Alita are insecure feminazis and weak-minded NPCs. The problem is that those people are very noisy and most of Hollywood, Cameron, Rodriguez and Nolan being three notable exceptions, are stupid enough to pander to them.

Me too. Gally didn't lose to Grewishka at all. She wasn't technically a Mary Sue because she still failed to save Yugo, but Alita lost to Grewishka and had to be rescued which gave much more weight to the movie. Since Hollywood has been throwing Mary Sues at us recently, we needed to see a female character who doesn't always win. It also gave Ido a reason to transfer her into another body, which he was reluctant to do at first. Also, I liked the romance more in the movie. Yugo may have technically been closer to the character in the manga than Hugo was, but he and Gally only really bonded in one scene and that was in the warehouse while Yugo was on the run. Because of this, I didn't feel particularly upset when he died. When Hugo died, I was actually sad. Even if he wasn't technically as faithful to the source material as Yugo was, I thought the romance between him and Alita was very sweet. I also prefer Chiren in the movie. Making her a grieving mother and Ido's ex-wife made her a lot more interesting and I also felt like she never fully shrugged off her selfish nature. When Vector told her that he was sending Hugo to Zylem and she realised exactly what that meant, I think it hit her that he was going to have her murdered too. That added more depth to her character because in the OVA, she just had a change of heart and that's it. In the movie, she still got her redemption arc with a bit more weight as she was doing it in memory of her daughter, but I think she also wanted to get out of her deal with Vector partially out of a sense of self-preservation. Unfortunately, she tried to back out too late.

I think it's more to cause her opponents to lower their guard. Most people won't be expecting a cute, wide eyed little girl to be capable of kicking the crap out of them. As someone who saw this movie, but not the anime I'd say it wasn't confusing at all. The ya romance was cheesy, and the plot did lack focus, but it wasn't confusing. I enjoyed this movie, and was excited to see a movie about such a unique world! Also, the action was a lot of fun. In fact it did spark my interest in checking out the Manga and the video.

Soy/pedo/left politics need to die. Alita was awesome. Watching it for the third time. In Sofia City, still popularity is going on for Alita.

My only problem with it was that had too many different plots going on, & they would jump from one to another quickly, in a few places they even dropped them with no conclusion. Also feel like they should have ended it a few scenes earlier than they did.

I really didn’t like this movie. The pacing for it felt like crap. Didn’t buy the main getting attached to someone for a day ie the doctor. Felt like pieces were missing and very by the books.

Script could have been more solid (I felt it was a bit rushed), the romance could have been more powerful with another actor (as they mentioned, he looks like the archetypical guy of every teenage franchise ever). However, its strengths are way bigger than its weaknesses imo. I was expecting another Mortal Engines, but instead I got a hella entertaining Cyberpunk movie with surprisingly good actors and something not that common to find in your average blockbuster: Heart. Whatever the original material was like, these people loved it. So with all the mediocre blockbusters I've seen lately (I've seen great ones too, don't take me for a living in a high castle persona), I feel the need to support this movie

As far as the eyes are concerned they makesensein a military tech sense. Theory, Instead of adding more tech in her head URM made all the Beserkers eyes bigger too increase peripherals and low-light by using the deadspace on the face. URM Beserkers seem to be designed for Space and Night combat large eyes absorb more light and her eye sight was show cased in the end scene contrasted with Nova's high tech ones

I think the idea with the eyes is that she’s Martian. Maybe martians evolved to have bigger eyes and they wanted their soldiers to look like them so that they don’t look like the enemy.

Great review. Very much enjoyed it. But just a question: did you say that you were basically talking if not shouting above the soundtrack during the film in the IMAX? I sure hope you bought everybody else in the cinema a ticket. The worst thing about going to the cinemas nowadays is how often the illusion is broken by nearby chit-chat and intrusive mobile phone screens. :(

So basically James Cameron really loved this as a fan. James truly believed in its potential and had the courage to admit that he can't do the job well enough to do it justice so he let someone like Robbie do his magic on this story. This is basically a solid feel good cyberpunk story that is positive despite the Dystopian setting.

Doug, you have to review it. It has nostalgic tie-ins, and it's FANTASTIC. But not enough people are going to see it because Anime adaptations have a bad reputation. Please, help it reach more people. Help it make enough money for a sequel!!

If he could make The Room a cult classic, he has to do it again. If Alita succeeds, big studios might finally get the message that we want good STORIES, not just One to One transferals of the most 'iconic' scenes.

I never read the comics or saw the anime, the movie was my first introduction to Alita and I thought it was awesome. It was a great movie, and even though there was a bit of a rushed feel to it , that rushed feel didn't "slap me in the face" as it has in other movies I felt were rushed and thus missed the mark. I hope there is a sequel!
